Child brought up to be equable (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tot

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'child' is the definition.
(term for a young child)

'up to be equable' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'to' is found in the answer.
A single letter 't' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'brought' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for tot that I've seen before include "A wee dram" , "Get the sum for the child" , "Rum measure" , "Add up for baby" , "quick drink" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
