Crossword Genius

Glistened and nearly boiled, keeping hot (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

shimmered

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'glistened' is the definition.
(shimmering is a kind of glistening)

'nearly boiled keeping hot' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'hot' could be 'h' (abbreviation eg on taps) and 'h' is located in the answer.
'boiled' could be 'simmered' (simmering is a kind of boiling) and 'simmered' is found within the remaining letters.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'and' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for shimmered that I've seen is " shone".)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
