Never hit an unmarried woman (4)
I believe the answer is:
miss
'unmarried woman' is the definition.
(as opposed to Mrs)
'never hit an' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'an' could be 'i' (Roman numeral for one) and 'i' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'mss' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for miss that I've seen before include "Don't hit" , "Feel the absence of" , "Fail to get" , "Fail to locate" , "Suffer from the lack of" .)
