On top, man turned against former European (8)
I believe the answer is:
yugoslav
'former european' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'on top man turned against' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'man' could be 'ugo' and 'ugo' is located in the answer.
'against' could be 'v' (versus) and 'v' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for yugoslav that I've seen before include "Balkan native" , "former statesman" , "Old East European" , "Former Belgrade native" , "from Croatia?" .)
