Ross

I believe the answer is:

charioteer

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'one in wild' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'race with hero going round circuit ultimately?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'race' could be 'chariot' (chariot race is a kind of race) and 'chariot' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'eer' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for charioteer that I've seen before include "Hippodrome racer" , "Driver of horse-drawn fighting vehicle" , "Driver common in early warfare" , "Driver of Roman vehicle" , "Ben Hur?" .)
