Secretary accompanying a Scotsman? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

paper

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'scotsman?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'secretary accompanying a' is the wordplay.
'secretary' becomes 'PA' (abbreviation for personal assistant).
'accompanying' says to put letters next to each other.
'a' becomes 'per' (eg 'one a day' means 'one per day').
'pa'+'per'='PAPER'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for paper that I've seen before include "Set of written exam questions" , "Treatise" , "Scholarly article" , "News publication" , "Set of examination questions" .)
