'spanish' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how they can define each other.

'girl after an artist?' is the wordplay.
'girl' becomes 'mona' ().
'after' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'an artist?' becomes 'RA' (Royal Academician, member of Royal Academy of Arts).
'mona' put after 'ra' is 'RAMONA'.
