Crossword Genius

A dog getting flower and stone (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

alabaster

'stone' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'a dog getting flower' is the wordplay.
'dog' becomes 'lab' (short for labrador).
'getting' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'flower' becomes 'aster' (aster is a kind of flower).
'a'+'lab'+'aster'='ALABASTER'

'and' is the link.

(Other definitions for alabaster that I've seen before include "White translucent form of gypsum used for statues, vases etc" , "Carved form of gypsum" , "White or translucent mineral" , "White gypsum used for carving" , "Material for sculpting" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
