I believe the answer is:

rehears

'picks up again?' is the definition.
('hears' can be a synonym for 'picks up' so perhaps 'rehears' is OK for 'picks up again')

I cannot understand how the rest of the clue works.

(Other definitions for rehears that I've seen before include "judges over" , "Once again tries" .)
