Agreed to contract movers in Middle East (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

yemen

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'middle east' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both locations as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps there's an association between them I don't understand?

'agreed to contract movers in' is the wordplay.
'agreed to' becomes 'met' (I've seen this in another clue).
'contract' means to remove the last letter (contract can mean to shorten).
'movers' becomes 'yen' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'in' is an insertion indicator.
'met' with its last letter removed is 'me'.
'me' placed within 'yen' is 'YEMEN'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for yemen that I've seen before include "Aden is found here" , "Arab country" , "Arabian country, capital Sanaa" , "Arabian republic, capital Sanaa" , "Republic on the Arabian Peninsula" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
