Crossword Genius

Aim to go round edges of land and sea to get top prize (4,5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gold medal

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'top prize' is the definition.
'gold medal' can be an answer for 'prize' (I've seen this before). I'm unsure of the 'top' bit.

'aim to go round edges of land and sea' is the wordplay.
'aim' becomes 'goal' (I've seen this in another clue).
'to go round' is an insertion indicator.
'edges of land' becomes 'ld' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'sea' becomes 'med' (abbreviation of Mediterranean).
'ld'+'med'='ldmed'
'goal' placed around 'ldmed' is 'GOLD MEDAL'.

'to get' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for gold medal that I've seen before include "Award for Olympic winner" , "First prize" , "top award" , "Victor may get one" , "prize for winning" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
