Crossword Genius

Analgesic fellow cathedral priest talked of (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

codeine

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'analgesic' is the definition.
(I know that codeine is a type of analgesic)

'fellow cathedral priest talked of' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'fellow' could be 'co' (eg a co-worker is a fellow worker) and 'co' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for codeine that I've seen before include "Common painkiller" , "Analgesic drug" , "Common opium-based tablet used to relieve pain" , "Morphine-derived analgesic; die once (anag.)" , "Niece, do take this drug" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
