Crossword Genius

Bewildered female escaped, having upset sailor earlier (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

baffled

'bewildered' is the definition.
('baffle' can be a synonym of 'bewilder')

'female escaped having upset sailor earlier' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'female' could be 'f' (abbreviation) and 'f' is present in the answer.
'escaped' could be 'fled' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'fled' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ba' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for baffled that I've seen before include "Perplexed" , "Confused" , "Completely mystified" , "Frustrated" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
