Crossword Genius

Brilliant display of yarn wound around cape (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

eclat

'brilliant display' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'yarn wound around cape' is the wordplay.
'yarn' becomes 'tale' ('tale' can be a synonym of 'yarn').
'wound' says the letters should be written backwards (as in wound back).
'around' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'cape' becomes 'c' (abbreviation used on maps).
'tale' in reverse letter order is 'elat'.
'elat' enclosing 'c' is 'ECLAT'.

'of' is the link.

(Other definitions for eclat that I've seen before include "Ostentation" , "Enthusiastic approval" , "Splendour; renown" , "Loud applause" , "Ceremonial elegance and splendour" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
