Colourless football team switching pair at the back (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

albino

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'colourless football team' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how they can define each other.

'switching pair at the back' is the wordplay.
'switching pair' becomes 'albi' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'at' becomes 'on' (location).
'the back' says the letters should be written backwards.
'on' reversed gives 'no'.
'albi'+'no'='ALBINO'

(Other definitions for albino that I've seen before include "Person lacking natural pigmentation" , "Person lacking pigment" , "Animal or plant lacking pigmentation" , "Animal with pigment deficiency" , "Person or animal with no colouring pigment" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
