Crossword Genius

Dessert wine and nuts are dished out on base (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sauterne

'dessert wine' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'nuts are dished out on base' is the wordplay.
'dished out' indicates anagramming the letters.
'on' indicates putting letters inside (as in clothing 'on' a person).
'base' becomes 'e' (Euler's number - base of natural logarithms).
'nuts'+'are'='nutsare'
'nutsare' is an anagram of 'sautrne'.
'sautrne' enclosing 'e' is 'SAUTERNE'.

'and' is the link.

(Other definitions for sauterne that I've seen before include "Golden dessert wine, US style" , "drink" , "Sweet French white wine" , "Sweet white dessert wine" , "Sweet white wine from around Bordeaux" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
