Crossword Genius

Discontinue drinking alcohol following beastly viral disease (5,5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

swine fever

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'disease' is the definition.
(I have seen 'Disease of pigs ' mean 'swine fever' so perhaps 'disease' could also mean 'swine fever')

'discontinue drinking alcohol following beastly viral' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'alcohol' could be 'wine' (wine is a kind of alcohol) and 'wine' is present in the answer.
'following' could be 'f' (used when citing page numbers etc) and 'f' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'sever' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for swine fever that I've seen before include "Viral disease of pigs" , "beastly complaint" , "Porker's complaint" .)

I've seen this clue in The Hindu.
