English soccer team at home in The Den? (9)

I believe the answer is:
lionesses
'in the den?' is the definition.
I can't tell whether this definition defines the answer.
'english soccer team at home' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'english' could be 'e' (abbreviation) and 'e' is found in the answer.
'at' could be 'on' (location) and 'on' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'lisses' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
