I believe the answer is:

pastries

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'cakes' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both things that one consumes for nourishment as well as being plural nouns.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

'father and sister cooked' is the wordplay.
'father' becomes 'pa' (pa can mean dad or father).
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'cooked' indicates an anagram (letters cooked into a new form).
'sister' with letters rearranged gives 'stries'.
'pa'+'stries'='PASTRIES'

(Another definition for pastries that I've seen is " Bakery items".)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
