Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their base form, I don't see how one could define the other.
'princess has gout' is the wordplay.
'princess' becomes 'di' (Princess Diana).
'has' says to put letters next to each other.
'di'+'gout'='DIG OUT'
'the' acts as a link.
