Crossword Genius

Give up again, perhaps, and go back (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

recede

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'go back' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'give up again perhaps' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'give' could be 'cede' (ceding is a kind of giving) and 'cede' is present in the answer.
'again' could be 're' (prefix meaning 'again') and 're' is found in the answer.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'and' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for recede that I've seen before include "Start balding" , "Decree (anag) - ebb" , "Decline" , "Become more distant" , "Go back, ebb" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
