Crossword Genius

Given instruction in law (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

briefed

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'given instruction in law' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with communicating as well as being past participle verbs.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'given' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'given' could be 'fed' ('feed' can be a synonym of 'give') and 'fed' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'brie' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for briefed that I've seen before include "Instructed in advance" , "Advised or instructed, like barrister" , "Informed of the facts" , "Prepared" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
