Crossword Genius

Half grand, Queen uplifted governments (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

regimes

'governments' is the definition.
('regime' can be a synonym of 'government')

'half grand queen uplifted' is the wordplay.
'half' becomes 'semi' (I've seen this before).
'grand' becomes 'g' ('G' can be a synonym of 'grand').
'queen' becomes 'er' (abbreviation for Elizabeth Regina).
'uplifted' is a reversal indicator.
'semi'+'g'+'er'='semiger'
'semiger' in reverse letter order is 'REGIMES'.

(Other definitions for regimes that I've seen before include "Governments in power" , "Systems of government or courses of treatment" , "rules" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
