Help learner to complete round of whist (4,1,4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

lend a hand

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'help' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'learner to complete round of whist' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'learner' could be 'l' (as in a learner driver with L-plates on their car) and 'l' is found in the answer.
'complete' could be 'end' (complete means to finish or end) and 'end' is present in the answer.
'round' could be 'hand' (I have seen 'Round of applause ' mean 'hand' so perhaps 'round' could also mean 'hand') and 'hand' is located in the answer.
A single letter 'a' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for lend a hand that I've seen before include "Turn to and help" , "Provide help" , "To assist" , "Pitch in" , "Give assistance" .)
