I believe the answer is:
assist
'help' is the definition.
(to assist someone is to help them)
'towards one's goal' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'one's' could be 'is' (Roman numeral) and 'is' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'asst' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
