Honour the French ancient city and the Spanish (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

laurel

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'honour' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how they can define each other.

'the french ancient city and the spanish' is the wordplay.
'the french' becomes 'la'.
'ancient city' becomes 'ur'.
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'the spanish' becomes 'el' ('the' in Spanish).
'la'+'ur'+'el'='LAUREL'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for laurel that I've seen before include "Old comic" , "Companion to Hardy" , "literary award" , "Hardy's comic pal" , "generally known not to be hardy" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
