Crossword Genius

Independent satisfied over article (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

item

'article' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'independent satisfied over' is the wordplay.
'independent' becomes 'i'.
'satisfied' becomes 'met' (as in 'met the conditions of his contract').
'over' says the letters should be written backwards.
'met' written backwards gives 'tem'.
'i'+'tem'='ITEM'

(Other definitions for item that I've seen before include "Single thing, poor mite" , "pair?" , "Part of a list" , "Also no more" , "Two people widely seen as one?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
