Crossword Genius

Jack’s hat? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

straw

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue could be a double definition.

'jack's' is the first definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with contact as well as being verbs in their base form.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

'hat?' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how they can define each other.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for straw that I've seen before include "Plant fibre used as fodder" , "Dry stalks" , "It's clutched at in desperation" , "Pale-yellow - through which one can drink" , "Dry stalk of grain" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
