Crossword Genius

Kings, for example, confront jokers (4,5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

face cards

'kings for example' is the definition.
(king is a kind of face card)

'confront jokers' is the wordplay.
'confront' becomes 'face' ('face' can be a synonym of 'confront').
'jokers' becomes 'cards' (jokers are playing cards).
'face'+'cards'='FACE-CARDS'

(Other definitions for face cards that I've seen before include "Kings, for example," , "will soon get fired?" , "Perhaps knaves" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
