Crossword Genius

Leaves the shores (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

strands

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This might be a double definition.

'leaves' is the first definition.
The answer and definition can be both man-made objects as well as being plural nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'shores' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their -s form, I don't see how they can define each other.

'the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for strands that I've seen before include "Threads, fibres" , "Filaments" , "Threads or beaches" , "Leaves helpless on the sand" , "Strings or chains" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
