I believe the answer is:

simplest

'most basic' is the definition.
(simple can mean basic)

'work misspelt' is the wordplay.
'work' is an anagram indicator.
'misspelt' with letters rearranged gives 'SIMPLEST'.

(Other definitions for simplest that I've seen before include "Least complex or complicated" , "US TV award" , "Easiest, least complex" , "Misspelt in the least complicated way" .)
