Crossword Genius

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tahoe

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'mountain lake' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'a height one on foot can handle' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'a' is within the answer.
'height' could be 'h' (abbreviation in geometry) and 'h' is located in the answer.
'one' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'te' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'of' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for tahoe that I've seen before include "US lake" , "Mountain lake" , "the Nevada/California border area" , "Lake in Sierra Nevada mountains" , "Nevada/California lake" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
