Neighbours' greeting, perhaps not straight across front of drive? (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

gday

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'neighbours' greeting' is the definition.
'gday' can be an answer for 'greeting' (I've seen this before). I am not sure about the 'neighbours'' bit.

'not straight across front of drive?' is the wordplay.
'not straight' becomes 'gay' (straight is the opposite of gay).
'across' is an insertion indicator.
'front of' says to take the initial letters (the letter at the front of the word).
The first letter of 'drive' is 'd'.
'gay' enclosing 'd' is 'GDAY'.

'perhaps' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for gday that I've seen before include "Aussie opener" , "welcome in Australia" , "greeting from Adelaide?" .)
