Crossword Genius

Obsequious host following modern miss around (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

smarmy

'obsequious' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'host following modern miss around' is the wordplay.
'host' becomes 'army' (I've seen this before).
'following' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'modern miss' becomes 'ms' (alternative to 'miss').
'around' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'ms' written backwards gives 'sm'.
'army' put after 'sm' is 'SMARMY'.

(Other definitions for smarmy that I've seen before include "Conceal oneself" , "Excessively flattering (R, not L)" , "Obsequious" , "Unctuous" , "Excessively ingratiating" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
