Crossword Genius

One succeeding around theatre, flipping amateur! (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

inexpert

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'amateur' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'one succeeding around theatre' is the wordplay.
'one succeeding' becomes 'makingit' (I've seen this in another clue).
'around' indicates the central letters.
'theatre' becomes 'expert' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
The middle letters of 'makingit' are 'in'.
'in'+'expert'='INEXPERT'

'flipping' acts as a link.
This may not be right. It may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for inexpert that I've seen before include "Lacking professional skill" , "Lacking skill or knowledge" , "unprofessional" , "not clever" , "Green" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
