Crossword Genius

Pal had destroyed shrine icon (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

buddha

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'shrine icon' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how they can define each other.

'pal had destroyed' is the wordplay.
'pal' becomes 'bud' (I've seen this in another clue).
'destroyed' indicates anagramming the letters.
'had' anagrammed gives 'dha'.
'bud'+'dha'='BUDDHA'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for buddha that I've seen before include "Title of Gautama, Indian philosopher of 5th century BC" , "Gautama . . . . . ., founder of eastern religion" , "Alternatively, Gautama Siddhartha" , "Founder of an Indian religion and philosophy" , "Gautama; his statue" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
