Pale-skinned king, Danish (6)

I believe the answer is:
pastry
'danish' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)
'pale-skinned king' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'king' could be 'r' (abbreviation for rex, king in Latin) and 'r' is located in the answer.
'pale' could be 'pasty' (synonyms) and 'pasty' is located in the remaining letters.
No letters remain.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for pastry that I've seen before include "Cake - tart" , "'Dough of flour, fat and water (6)'" , "Pie base" , "What makes crust" , "Dough made from flour, fat and water" .)
