Permit one to move after damaging allegations (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bermuda

'permit' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'one to move after damaging allegations' is the wordplay.
'one' becomes 'a'.
'to' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other) (I've seen this in other clues).
'move' becomes 'ber' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'after' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'damaging allegations' becomes 'mud' (I've seen this before).
'ber'+'mud'='bermud'
'a' put after 'bermud' is 'BERMUDA'.

(Other definitions for bermuda that I've seen before include "shorts originated here" , "Island group in NW Atlantic" , "Islands in the north-west Atlantic" , "Producer of rum" , "Group of islands in West Atlantic - has notorious Triangle" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
