'rocambole' can be an answer for 'plant' (I've seen this before). I am not sure about the 'eccentric fellow' bit.
'part' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'part' could be 'cam' (I have seen 'Part of engine' mean 'cam' so perhaps 'part' could also mean 'cam') and 'cam' is found within the answer.
