Crossword Genius

Points out the only run in the stockings (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nylons

'stockings' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'points out the only run' is the wordplay.
'points' becomes 'ns' (N is an example).
'out' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'run' is an anagram indicator.
'only' is an anagram of 'ylon'.
'ns' going around 'ylon' is 'NYLONS'.

'in the' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for nylons that I've seen before include "Hose" , "Women's stockings made from a sheer material" , "Thin tights" , "Hosiery" , "Women's stockings made of synthetic fibre" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
