Crossword Genius

Portugal and Spain must welcome positive vote for beneficiary of order (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

payee

'beneficiary of order' is the definition.
(recipient of a pay order)

'portugal and spain must welcome positive vote' is the wordplay.
'portugal' becomes 'p' (common abbreviation eg on car number plates).
'and' says to put letters next to each other.
'spain' becomes 'e' (abbreviation for Espana).
'must welcome' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'positive vote' becomes 'aye' (I've seen this in another clue).
'p'+'e'='pe'
'pe' enclosing 'aye' is 'PAYEE'.

'for' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for payee that I've seen before include "He gets the dough" , "To whom cheque is written" , "One receiving money" , "One getting his dues" , ".The one who gets the cheque" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
