Crossword Genius

Rake, for example, up bum (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cadge

'bum' is the definition.
(both can mean to beg someone for something)

'rake for example up' is the wordplay.
'rake' becomes 'cad' (I've seen this in another clue).
'for example' becomes 'e.g.' (short for 'exempli gratia', 'for example' in Latin).
'up' says the letters should be written backwards (in down clue: letters go upwards).
'eg' written backwards gives 'ge'.
'cad'+'ge'='CADGE'

(Other definitions for cadge that I've seen before include "Scrounge, sponge" , "Scrounge (money, etc)" , "get free" , "Try to get (something) without paying" , "Caged (anag.)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
