Crossword Genius

Sailors get their share when clippers take off (4,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

crew cut

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'take off' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't see how one could define the other.

'sailors get their share when clippers' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'sailors' could be 'crew' (I've seen this before) and 'crew' is located in the answer.
'share' could be 'cut' (cut is a kind of share) and 'cut' is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for crew cut that I've seen before include "Style on top" , "in which redundancies effected?" , "Distressing" , "Man's haircut, close-cropped all over (4.3)" , "Outcome of airline economy study" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
