'ormers' can be an answer for 'shells' (I've seen this before). I am unsure of the 'old' bit.
'section but fighter escapes' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'section' could be 's' (legal abbreviation) and 's' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ormer' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
