Something hairy not far from the viewer (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

eyelash

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'something hairy not far from' is the definition.
I can't judge whether this defines the answer.

'viewer' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'viewer' could be 'eye' (organ which sees or views) and 'eye' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'lash' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for eyelash that I've seen before include "A hair in fringe above optic" , "hair near Iris" , "maybe one drops with a wink" , "one of many in front of pupils" , "Short facial hair" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
