Crossword Genius

Squeeze dry, sound as a bell, we hear (5,3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

wring out

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'squeeze dry' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'sound as a bell we hear' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'sound' could be 'ring' (ring is a kind of sound) and 'ring' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for wring out that I've seen is " Twist and squeeze dry".)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
