Crossword Genius

Stars, single, sold out (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

idols

'stars' is the definition.
(idol is a kind of star)

'single sold out' is the wordplay.
'single' becomes 'i' (one**).
'out' indicates an anagram (out can mean wrong or inaccurate).
'sold' anagrammed gives 'dols'.
'i'+'dols'='IDOLS'

(Other definitions for idols that I've seen before include "Effigies worshipped as gods" , "objects such as the Golden Calf" , "Heroes" , "Objects of worship" , "Solid kind of images" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
