Crossword Genius

Storyteller producing a work about French art (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

aesop

'storyteller' is the definition.
(Aesop is an example)

'a work about french art' is the wordplay.
'work' becomes 'op' (abbreviation for opus).
'about' says to put letters next to each other.
'french art' becomes 'es' ('is' in French - 'art' can mean 'is' eg 'thou art').
'op' put after 'es' is 'esop'.
'a'+'esop'='AESOP'

'producing' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for aesop that I've seen before include "his writings were fabulous" , "he wrote in Greek" , "Poses as ancient Greek writer" , "A pose by Greek writer of fables" , "Greek author of fables (c 620-560 BC)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
