Crossword Genius

Strip the study you would, I hear, start exhibiting (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

denude

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'strip' is the definition.
(I know that strip can be written as denude)

'study you would i hear start exhibiting' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'study' could be 'den' (term for a study or office) and 'den' is present in the answer.
'you' could be 'u' (commonly used in online communication) and 'u' is located in the answer.
'would' could be 'd' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'd' is found within the answer.
A single letter 'e' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'the' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for denude that I've seen before include "Uncover" , "Put off covering" , "Strip cover from, as leaves from trees" , "Strip, deprive, of" , "Strip away cover, make bare" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
