Crossword Genius

The climbing plant, as one guessed, did cover it (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

vine

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'the climbing plant' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'cover it' is the wordplay.
'cover' becomes 'vin' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'it' becomes 'e' ('e' can mean 'electronic' which is similar to 'IT').
'vin'+'e'='VINE'

'as one guessed did' acts as a link.
This may not be right. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for vine that I've seen before include "On which grapes grow" , "Climbing, twining plant" , "Climbing plant that needs support" , "Climbing fruiting plant" , "Climber - creeper" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
